Bill and I somehow ended up in a discussion about Bridge over troubled water. Neither of us could recall a single cover version off hand.
As it turns out there are many, many covers of this song. (over 400) .
Here is the original version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G-YQA_bsOU
As you might expect, I have been listening to a bunch of versions.
Here is Aretha Franklin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9-yfeA2JZs
Whitney Houston and Cece WInans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGL099t8i2s
Johnny Cash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omxAjFFnrLk
Merry Clayton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5JDUKfAHQA
Roberta Flack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k49yMJE8jyg
Paul Desmond’s saxophone version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhPPC_IwbGc
Buck Owens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h8cit07g5o
Waylon Jennings and Jessie Colter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St7PbZaMHdM
Blind Boys of Alabama https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcgGrIRLYnw
Vince Gill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dqXbRRAxB0
And of course Willie did one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riVZif0zt2Y
If forced to choose which I like best: The original of course. But I also really think Aretha Franklin, Merry Clayton and Johnny Cash’s versions should all be played more. I really don’t care for the Buck Owens one but that may be because he has never been a favored singer for me.
